I am a retired mathematics teacher/coach who has the luxury of picking and choosing the math projects that I want to invest in. While I loved my work in the public school sector, I find that working with students one-on-one and teaching very small classes is extremely rewarding and enlightening. Jo Boaler refers to Heinrich Brinkmann, a Swarthmore professor, "who was known for being able to find something right in what every student said." This is amazing and in an average- size  class it is almost impossible to do on a consistent basis. But when tutoring students one-on-one this is exactly what you are able to do. And the benefits affect both the student and the tutor. The change in attitude of the student as well as the improvement of his/her understanding of the math concepts greatly redirects the student's academic path. This practice is easy for parents and tutors to apply, but how can teachers of large classes incorporate this practice on a regular basis?
